Delight in the Wonder of Hill Country
The hill country in Texas is maybe one of the best places in the state to enjoy the outdoors if you like to hike and spend time with nature. For a minimum amount of money, you can spend a week or two camping at one of the many state parks in the area, and enjoy the entire outdoors you can handle. Hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching, and relaxing are just a few of the pursuits you can enjoy at a state park.
If you're not the "ultra-outdoorsy" type — you like being outdoors but you don't want to spend your nights trapped in a tent or RV — then Inks State Park is a fantastic place to go. For the light adventurer, they supply air-conditioned cabins for rent so you can spend your days in the sun and your nights inside away from the bugs and humidity. The park is expansive and lovely, so you won't feel like you're missing out on anything if you stay here. It brings together the best of both worlds, the contemporary and the natural world.
For real hikers, Fredericksburg, Texas is most likely where you want to stay. This town is home to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, a park whose focal point is a big, pink granite mountain dome 1,800 feet tall completely surrounded by vegetation at the base. The rock is filled with sites to hike and adventure, and the view from the top is stunning. The enormous rock protruding up from the surface of the earth is a spectacle itself.
Kickapoo Caverns and Devil's Sink Hole are also excellent places to spend some time, and each is unique. Both offer a great deal of activities year-round for the whole family, including bike riding and fly-fishing lessons. Before choosing one or a number of parks, be sure to check them all out online and see which ones supply the amenities and activities that best suits your needs. The web pages are very precise about what's allowed, what's offered, and what's close by, so you'll know precisely what to expect when you get there.
