Delight in the Wonder of Hill Country
The hill country in Texas is perhaps one of the greatest places in the state to appreciate the outdoors if you like to hike and spend time with nature. For a small amount of money, you can devote a week or two camping at one of the many state parks in the region, and enjoy the entire outdoors you can stand. Hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching, and relaxing are just some of the activities you can appreciate at a state park.
If you're not the "ultra-outdoorsy" type — you like being outside but you don't want to spend your nights trapped in a tent or RV — then Inks State Park is a great place to go. For the light adventurer, they offer air-conditioned cabins for rent so you can spend your days in the sun and your nights indoors away from the bugs and humidity. The park is expansive and beautiful, so you won't feel like you're missing out on anything if you stay here. It combines the best of both worlds, the contemporary and the natural world.
For real hikers, Fredericksburg, Texas is probably where you want to stay. This town is home to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, a park whose focal point is a massive, pink granite mountain dome 1,800 feet tall entirely surrounded by vegetation at the base. The rock is filled with areas to hike and adventure, and the view from the top is gorgeous. The huge rock protruding up from the surface of the earth is a spectacle itself.
Kickapoo Caverns and Devil's Sink Hole are also wonderful places to invest some time, and each is exceptional. Both offer plenty of activities year-round for the entire family, including bike riding and fly-fishing lessons. Before choosing one or various parks, be sure to check them all out online and see which ones offer the amenities and activities that best suits your needs. The web pages are very distinct about what's permitted, what's available, and what's nearby, so you'll know exactly what to expect when you get there.
