Camping is an integral part of Texas tradition. Outside of the huge metropolitan neighborhoods lies an array of state parks and open terrain just waiting to be uncovered and enjoyed. And since you can go camping almost any night of the year, you have no excuse for leaving the sleeping bag stuffed in your garage.
Over 70 state parks are found in Texas, so there's definitely one nearby. Set out with the family for a relaxing weekend at the campsite. Complete the cliché with a bonfire and a day of fishing with the kids. If things go well, you can cook the fish you caught for supper that night.
If you're in the Dallas area, take advantage of Bonham, Cedar Hill, Eisenhower, or Lake Mineral Wells state parks. All have the amenities you'd expect to find at a state park, and some have great surprises for the children. Horseback riding, boating and hiking are but a few of the entertaining things to do. Grab the tent and pack up the kids.
Out in the state, head for Hill Country in Central Texas. This area offers some of the best camping in the state, with tons of opportunities to hike and explore. Blanco, Garner, Inks Lake, and McKinney Falls are some of the more notable parks, with playgrounds, tubing, canoeing and kayaking. Some have cabins for rent, so you can easily enjoy the outdoor experience without sleeping under the open sky.
The Best of the Destinations
After you've hit all the well-known and regular tourist attractions and hot-spots in Dallas, keep looking – you're not done yet. There are some eclectic and less-popular places in the locale that are still well work a visit. A few are mentioned here, and there are also many more as well. These are, without a doubt, the best of the rest.
Commence at the Frontiers of Flight Museum. This off-beat museum houses a variety of flying machines from the beginning of flight itself to today. There's a little bit of stuff for everyone here from bi-planes to rockets, so take some time to check it out.
From the nostalgic to the modern, head over to the new stadium of the Dallas Cowboys. This technological wonder is a world unto itself with everything imaginable for the die-hard football fan. Whether you take the tour or see an event, you'll be elated by the sheer size of this coliseum.
Finally, you can't leave Dallas without paying respect to President Kennedy by seeing the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Repository. The famous floor of this famous building from which the president was shot has been turned into a museum for the president, and it is a great tribute. The site can be quite crowded depending on when you visit, but if you're patient, you will be rewarded with a interesting exhibit.
