Facts for the Republic of Nicaragua
Nicaragua is located in Central America and is the largest country in the territory. It crosses from shoreline to shoreline, from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. It is surrounded on the north by Costa Rica and on the south by the Honduras. A country that is scattered with volcanoes and lakes, Nicaragua is home to one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world -- Lake Nicaragua.
Several volcanoes in the country even now remain active. One of these, Concepcion, lies right next to Lake Nicaragua. If you ascend the volcano, you can look out and see the township of Granada, the first colonial village of the Spanish when they landed on these coastlines. Another large volcano, Momotombo, lies in the same way on the other large lake in the country, Lake Managua, and looks down over the city of Managua, the country's capitol city. Leon, the historic sister city to Granada, can be seen from the summit of this volcano.
Although Nicaragua is currently a peaceful, unobtrusive democracy, it has stayed troubled with fighting and uprising in the past. The most recent fighting happened when the Sandinista army ousted the present leader of the country in the late 1970's, opening up the country to elections and democracy. Many in the current generation remember the movies and pictures of the revolt as it progressed. The country is currently run by a president and a congress.
