Facts about Nicaragua
Nicaragua is situated in Central America and is the largest nation in the region. It extends from coast to coast, from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. It is bordered on the north by Costa Rica and on the south by the Honduras. A nation that is spread with volcanoes and lakes, Nicaragua is home to one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world -- Lake Nicaragua.
Several volcanoes in the nation are still active. One of these, Concepcion, lies right alongside Lake Nicaragua. If you climb the volcano, you can overlook and see the settlement of Granada, the first colonial village of the Spanish when they appeared on these shores. Another big volcano, Momotombo, sits similarly on the other big lake in the nation, Lake Managua, and looks down over the town of Managua, the nation's capitol city. Leon, the historic sister town to Granada, is able to be spotted at the top of this volcano.
Even though Nicaragua is currently a nonviolent, unobtrusive democracy, it has stayed riddled with violence and rebellion in history. The most present violence occurred when the Sandinista army overthrew the existing ruler of the nation in the late 1970's, opening up the nation to elections and democracy. Many in the present generation remember the movies and photos of the revolution as it advanced. The nation is at the moment is ruled by a president and a congress.
