Island Living on a Budget - Galveston
Galveston, Texas is a well-known vacation destination with beautiful sights and plenty of things to do. But if you're trying to stretch your vacation dollar, there are still plenty of activities that are affordable on the island and just as much fun. So go for the sights and the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico, but keep your money in your pockets and see how far you can take it.
Obviously, there's the beach. Keep in mind, however, that it does have a fair number of paid beaches. Be sure to pick your spot carefully, so that you can park and sunbathe for free.
Bird watching is a favorite pastime of island visitors. The sea birds of the area, coastal habituating, and migratory birds are all present on the island most of the year, and during the right times you can see some very interesting species. Special times are always at daybreak and nightfall, since that's when the water birds hunt for their dinner.
If you are passionate about marine life, you must check out the Sea Turtle Research facility on the island. It is only one of a few in the United States. A free tour offers insights into many aspects of a sea turtle's life, allows you to view a variety of species, and even boasts a hatchery.
However, if all else fails on Galveston island, you can always go fishing or window shopping.
