I'm Definitely Going to Lima...Where to After That?
A trip to Peru almost invariably puts the traveler arriving in Lima, the capitol city. Lima is a great city, bustling and full of entertainment and shopping opportunities, and well worth a day or two of the trip to spend hanging out. But from that hub, there are a variety of selections available to the traveler to see the rest of the country. As a visitor, you will want to view as many of these places as you can to get a full, rich view of Peru.
Many folks head out of Lima and go directly to Cusco. Cusco is the starting point for a variety of tour options, including the famous Machu Picchu area and the ancient fortress still standing on its property. Any adventures or excursions into the Andes mountains will also originate from this location.
Paracas is another popular destination for tourists, as it puts them right next door to an enormous wildlife preserve. Visitors are always bewildered at the number of sea lions and sea birds that inhabit the nearby Ballestas Islands. It is well worth a day’s visit to see and marvel at the diversity of the animal community.
Farther south is the city of Arequipa. It is an interesting area for a variety of reasons. The town itself is built thousands of feet above sea level, and many of the houses and community structures have been built using white volcanic ash from a nearby active volcano. The area is also home to Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, nearly dwarfing the Grand Canyon in comparison.
Regardless of what the tourist resolves to do, a trip to the Amazon region is a must. The area is dotted with quaint villages like Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado, where the people speak not only Spanish, but also a variety of jungle dialects. The size, colors, and varieties of vegetation in this region are both staggering and bewitching. In addition, visitors will be able to get close to the jungle’s exotic variations of animals including monkeys, snakes, birds, and insects.
